The 12th annual BET Awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, on July 1, 2012. Mariah made a surprise appearance to honor Whitney Houston, who passed away earlier in the year.
Mariah was joined onstage by Miguel and Jeezy to perform their “#Beautiful” remix during the 13th annual BET Awards, which took place at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California, on June 30, 2013.
Mariah made a surprise appearance and joined rapper Latto onstage to perform their “Big Energy” remix during the 2022 BET Awards, were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, on June 26.
Busta Rhymes was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2023 BET Awards, which took place at the Microsoft Theater on June 25. Mariah, who has collaborated with him in the past, was featured on Busta's introduction video.
On June 9, 2025, Mariah received her very first BET Award. The Black Entertainment Network honored Mariah with the Ultimate Icon Award, a special recognition which celebrates an artist's decades of groundbreaking contributions to music, entertainment, advocacy, and community impact. “Life is far too short to live for anyone else's approval — which is something I always did,” Mariah said during her acceptance speech. “So I decided to own who I am. My extraness, my fabulousness and yes, my success and my iconicness. I just want to encourage everyone out there to believe in yourself, love and respect yourself. Be a diva, be a boss, be anything you wanna be, but be iconic while you're doing it.” Mariah also performed her new single “Type Dangerous” during the show, joined by legendary rapper Rakim.
