The Remixes

Released by Columbia Records on October 14, 2003, The Remixes is a two CD collection jam-packed with 22 of Mariah's chart-topping club and urban remixes. “It's become one of my trademarks to revisit my songs when we do remixes,” Mariah told Billboard in 1999. “To me, it's not good enough to just let someone go into the studio and add some beats or samples to my songs. Inevitably, I wind up rewriting a lot of the song, or rearranging the vocals and melodies. It's a fun exercise in that it allows me to rethink the song and add some new ideas.” The compilation peaked at number twenty-six on the Billboard 200 album chart and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on October 9, 2019.

Disc 1 features nine remixes by some of the hottest producers in dance music history — David Morales, Junior Vasquez, Hex Hector, and Cole & Clivillés — including six number-one songs on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. “There are very few people that Mariah will go into the studio with as far as producers go, because we always reconstruct everything for the most part,” David Morales told Billboard. “And with [the ‘Dreamlover’ remix] we were producing a new song. The way she sang it was different, the background was different. We changed the game of remixing at that point. Mariah opened up a whole other door, and not many people at that time were capable of that. When other big artists saw what I did with Mariah, they wanted that. She's how I got into the studio with Toni Braxton, Aretha Franklin, Seal and Donna Summer.”

Over the course of her career, Mariah has established herself as a leader and innovator in creating cutting-edge collaborations between the worlds of pop and urban music. “The ‘Fantasy’ remix was responsible for, I would argue, an entire way of music that we've seen since,” music journalist John Norris said about Mariah's influence. “And that is the Pop/Hip-Hop collaboration. You could argue that that ‘Fantasy’ remix was the single most important recording that she ever made.”

Disc 2 is essentially a who's who of Hip-Hop music, with guest appearances by Wu Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, Nas and Jadakiss, to name a few. The Remixes also includes Mariah's Top 3 Hot 100 smash, “I Know What You Want,” featuring Busta Rhymes and the Flipmode Squad; and a previously unreleased remix of “The One,” featuring Bone Crusher.
